How the Immune System Works

The immune system is a distributed network of barriers, cells, tissues, organs, signaling molecules, antibodies, and memory mechanisms. Its job is not simply to become stronger. It must recognize threats, respond proportionally, limit damage, tolerate harmless material, and recover.

First-line barriers

The skin, mucus, respiratory tract, digestive tract, antimicrobial molecules, normal microorganisms, and mechanical clearance help limit entry and growth of harmful organisms.

Adaptive immunity

Adaptive immunity uses B cells and T cells to recognize specific antigens.

B cells and antibodies

T cells

T-cell categories include helper, cytotoxic, regulatory, and memory populations.

Immune memory

After selected infections or vaccination, memory B and T cells can support a faster future response.

Natural killer cells

NK cells can recognize and kill selected stressed or abnormal cells without using the same antigen-specific receptors as T cells.

A laboratory increase in NK-cell activity does not automatically prove a clinical benefit.

Cytokines

Cytokines are signaling proteins that coordinate immune activity. They can promote or limit inflammation depending on type, timing, and context.

Lymphatic system

Lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, tonsils, and mucosal immune tissues support immune-cell development, movement, and interaction.

Balance matters

Too little activity can increase infection risk. Excessive or misdirected activity can contribute to allergy, autoimmunity, chronic inflammation, and tissue damage.
