Immune Support Ingredients

Immune-support ingredients differ in biological role, evidence, dose, safety, and product quality. They should not be grouped together as interchangeable immune boosters.

Essential nutrients

Zinc

Zinc supports immune-cell development and enzyme function. Long-term high doses can impair copper status.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C supports antioxidant defense and normal immune function. Regular high-dose use does not guarantee cold prevention.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D participates in immune regulation and bone health. Deficiency correction is different from megadose treatment.

Vitamins A, B6, B12, and E

These nutrients support normal barriers, metabolism, blood-cell formation, and immune biology. Excess can be harmful depending on the nutrient.

Selenium, copper, and iron

These minerals are required in small amounts. Both deficiency and excess matter.

Protein and amino acids

Protein supplies amino acids for antibodies, enzymes, receptors, signaling proteins, immune cells, and tissue repair.

Beta-glucans

Beta-glucans vary by source and structure. Cereal, yeast, and mushroom beta-glucans should not be treated as identical.

Mushrooms

Common supplement species include shiitake, maitake, cordyceps, agaricus, reishi, and turkey tail.

Compare species, fruiting body or mycelium, extraction, beta-glucan content, dose, and evidence.

Botanicals

Elderberry, echinacea, garlic, and other botanicals vary by species, plant part, extract, concentration, and interaction risk.

Propolis and bee products

Bee-derived ingredients can cause allergy and vary substantially by source.

Probiotics and fermented foods

Probiotic effects are strain- and outcome-specific. Not every fermented food contains a proven probiotic.

Colostrum and lactoferrin

Whole bovine colostrum is a complex dairy-derived ingredient. Lactoferrin is one protein and should be evaluated separately.

Antioxidants and CoQ10

Antioxidant activity in a laboratory does not automatically predict a health outcome.
