Bovine Colostrum, Immune Peptides, and Transfer Factor

Bovine colostrum is the early secretion cows produce around calving. It contains proteins, immunoglobulins, lactoferrin, growth factors, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and peptides.

It is a complex ingredient—not a single molecule.

Major colostrum components

Immunoglobulins

Bovine IgG is usually the dominant immunoglobulin. IgA and IgM can also be present.

Cow immunoglobulins do not become the consumer’s own circulating human antibodies or adaptive immune memory.

Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein involved in innate defense biology. Isolated lactoferrin supplements are not equivalent to whole colostrum.

Casein and whey proteins

Colostrum contains dairy proteins and must be treated as a milk-derived allergen.

Peptides and growth factors

Processing and digestion can create or release smaller peptides. Their presence does not automatically establish a clinical effect after oral use.

How colostrum becomes a supplement

Commercial production can include:

  1. collection after calving;
  2. chilling or freezing;
  3. quality screening;
  4. microbial-risk reduction;
  5. filtration or concentration;
  6. spray-drying or freeze-drying;
  7. IgG or protein standardization;
  8. finished-product testing.

Quality depends on the entire chain.

Evidence for adults

Research has examined exercise recovery, intestinal permeability, respiratory symptoms, immune markers, and general tolerance.

Results differ by product, dose, population, study design, and outcome. Colostrum is not established as a universal gut or immune treatment.

Safety

The most important safety issue is milk-protein allergy. Low-lactose status does not make the product safe for milk allergy.

Compare total grams, IgG standardization, collection claims, processing, microbial and contaminant testing, allergens, additives, format, and cost per gram.
